The San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild is proud to present En Plein-Air, A Charles Reiffel Tribute 2013, an international art competition. You are cordially invited to join us in our celebration of plein-air painting by entering your art in our competition. The show will be juried by world-class art historians Martin E. Petersen and Jean Stern.
Martin E. Petersen was senior Curator of American Painting at the San Diego Museum of Art 1957-1996. During his long tenure he wrote numerous articles for publications such as "Applause Magazine", "Art of California", "Western Art Digest", "Journal of San Diego History", and "Southwest Art" to name a few. Among his published books are Plein Air Painters of California: the Southland, Irvine: Westphal Publishing, 1982, chapter "San Diego Beginnings," and Plein Air Painters of California: the Northland, Irvine: Westphal Publishing, 1986, essays "Colin Campbell Cooper (1856-1937)," and "Paul Dougherty (1877-1947)”.
Jean Stern, the Executive Director of the Irvine Museum, is a renowned authority on Californian Impressionism. Stern has single handedly secured a national presence for the Irvine Museum since its inception in 1993 through a series of books, lectures, tours, video documentaries, articles, and exhibitions, as well as securing one of the most impressive collections of California Impressionism. In 2011, Jean Stern authored California Light: A Century of Landscapes in collaboration with the California Art Club.
