PROJECT POP UP will showcase the works of Michigan artists through free and accessible

arts events and exhibitions, which will enhance a sense of place and build community in

downtown Lansing. Supported by the City of Lansing’s Sense of Place in the Arts Grant, this

project is intended to inspire and engage Lansing’s visitors, residents, and businesses.

Installations will range from large-scale artwork reproductions to yarn-bombing, and activities

will range from plein-air painting to flash mobs.

Call for Artists - Three Opportunities

Lansing Art Gallery seeks artists to participate in PROJECT POP UP for three public projects

in downtown Lansing on Washington Square. Located one block from the State Capitol, this

area flanks the roundabout intersection of Washington Square and Michigan Avenues. Artists

are encouraged to visit the PROJECT POP UP sites in person or online. No entry fee is

required for any submissions. All submissions will be made online at

• Artists must be 18 year of age or older.

• Artists must be current residents of Michigan.

• Artists may submit individual work or collaborative work. If artwork is collaborative,

artists should elect a group representative to be the main contact.

• Work must be original in concept and design and may not be the result of instruction.


Submission Deadline (online only): April 10, 2015

Jury notification: April 23, 2015

Dates for installation: May 23 – May 29, 2015

Dates of exhibit: May 30 – August 30, 2015

Dates for de-installation: August 31 – September 6, 2015


PROJECT POP UP will include promotions for participating artists including statewide

marketing, installation signage, and opportunities to display additional works of art on-site at

Lansing Art Gallery. An opening reception will offer participating POP UP artists an


opportunity for networking and fellowship.



Sites include:


• Up to 40 trees, approximately 20 inches in diameter, up to 36” vertical space

installed at eye level.

• A stipend of $100 per tree (no more than ten trees) will be provided to each

selected artist upon the completion of proposed project.

Yarn-bombing submissions will be made at and will

require the following:

• Up to 10 drawings of proposed yarn-bombing concept.

• 3 – 5 photographs of previously created fiber-based artwork.

• Current artist’s statement to be used for promotional purposes.

Additional information:

Submissions: Proposed work may include embellishments and enhancements but must be created with at

least 50% fiber materials and with fiber techniques (including, but not exclusive to quilting, embroidery,

knitting, crochet, tatting, weaving, felting, spinning) or with elements that reference fiber or fiber traditions.

No crafts, kits, or production work. The use of patterns is acceptable.

Artist is responsible for installation and removal OR shipping, insurance and return postage for artwork to be

returned. Artwork may be removed prior to the deadline if damage occurs. All yarn-bombing installations not

removed by the deadline of September 6 will become the property of Lansing Art Gallery.



This project is designed to activate under-utilized storefronts in downtown Lansing and

feature reproductions of artwork created by Michigan artists. Each selected artwork will be

reproduced and displayed directly on downtown storefront windows via professionally

created and installed window films. While the artist will retain copyright of accepted images,

Lansing Art Gallery will retain ownership of the printed reproduction at the close of the

• Artists may be selected to display no more than five artwork reproductions.

• Selected images may be slightly re-formatted to fit public art space.

POP UP Window Art submissions will be made at

and will require the following:

• 3 - 10 images of original artwork.

• Image resolution must be 300 dpi or higher as jpeg, png, tif, or psd.

• Current artist’s statement to be used for promotional purposes.


A series of POP UP Activities will include artful experiences, showcasing creativity and

increasing exposure to the arts for downtown residents, visitors, and businesses. Proposed

POP UP Activities must be free, appropriate for the public at large, and accessible for people

with disabilities. Ideally, this series of events will inspire community commitment and civic

engagement. Activities will take place on Wednesdays from noon – 1 p.m. mid-June through

mid-August in front of Lansing Art Gallery.

• Artist will be responsible for all costs associated with the activity.

• A stipend of up to $500 will be available per activity. Please include an estimated cost

in your proposal.

• Artists may be selected to complete no more than one activity.
