Memory Upgrade
Description

From December 2, 2010 – January 1, 2011, CoCA will present its annual juried exhibition seeking work from emerging as well as established artists in a wide variety of visual media. Artists in any region and any country are welcome to submit. The 2010 exhibition will focus on metaphors of memory, technology, and history as artists worldwide move forward from global financial collapse by changing various aspects of their work, whether media, size, price, etc. Two-dimensional, three-dimensional and multi-media work will be considered. If there are special requirements associated with the display of your work (including budgetary and/or space/time constraints), please indicate these in your email submission.

CoCA has presented the Annual since 1989, each time inviting an independent juror to select the work from among the entries received. For this year’s 21st anniversary of the show, CoCA is proud to have Juan Alonso as juror.

Over a career that spans 25 years, Alonso has received numerous grants, awards, and recognition from a wide variety of arts organization in the Seattle area, including the Behnke Foundation, PONCHO (2007 Artist of the Year), 4Culture, Mayors Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, Artist Trust, Pratt Fine Arts Center, and Centrum. Born in Cuba in 1956, Alonso came to the Unites States at an early age, leaving behind his family to learn a new language in a foreign place.

There will be an opening reception on Thursday December 2, at CoCA’s Pioneer Square location located inside the former Elliott bay Book Company at  310 1st Ave South in Pioneer Square, a national historic district.

A $500 first prize and a $250 second prize will be awarded by the juror, as well as up to three “honorable mentions” featured on CoCA’s website. A catalog of the show will feature artists’ statements, biographies, and images, as well as an introductory essay by the juror. In addition to having all participating artists archived on CoCA’s website, there will also be an opportunity to place work in CoCA’s new online store.
